WELLINGTON WINS THE CHAMPIONSHIP SHIELD.
By Telegraph. —Press Association. " Christchureh, Last Night.
The interprovincial hockey match, Wellington v. Canterbury, the last important fixture of the season, was played at Lancaster Park yesterday in sunny weather, 'before a large gathering of spectators. The match was doubly interesting because Wellington were the most redoubtable team that had put in a challenge for the Shield this year, Canterbury having successfully defended it up till yesterday. The match was a return one of the season, Canterbury having lifted 'the Shield from Welling- i ton earlier in the year. The Wellington forwards asserted their superiority early in the game, and outplayed Canterbxiry. In the first spell Canterbury. were assisted by numerous penalty hits, and generally observed the rules very strictly in contradistinction to loose observance by the visitors. Wellington's first goal was shot from a corner, and showed how dangerous a corner hit can be made by a clever team. In the second spell Cantebury did most of the attacking, and were extremely unlucky not to score several times. All the same, the Wellington goal-keeper played a sterling game and cleared time after time. The visitors' second goal was got by a momentary flash of brilliance among the forwards, for Canterbury were attack-' ing right up to tlie end of the game. Harrington played a solid game in the forwards, and Hulbert was playing a bit above his usual form, but all the forwards were inclined to get out of position. The best back on the grounds was Chambers, whose defence, especially in the first spell, was splendid. The match ended: Wellington 2, Canterbury 1. A protest has been lodged against Wellington's first goal, on the ground that, it was hit from outside the circle. The goal was scored from a. corner. Straek stopped the ball and immediately shot. Tt was noted that at the time Canterbury players shouted "Outside cicrcle!" and let the shot pass, but in any case it is doubtful whether it could have been stopped. If the goal is disallowed, the match will be drawn, and Canterbury will retain the shield.
