THE GAOLED STRIKERS,

Twenty-nine strikers, sentenced at Waihi, were conveyed by train to Newmarket in a special carriage. . At Newmarket the carriage was unhitched, attached to an engine and run along the Mount Eden railway line, which passes in front of the gaol. Here it was stopped and the prisoners quietly transferred to quarters with the strikers already in the institution. There were only one or two spectators, and there was no demonstration whatever. A RESOLUTION OF PROTEST. Timaru, Last Night. Three to four hundred men attended an open-air meeting this afternoon, at which two waterside workers spoke on the aims of the Federation of Labor and the causes of the Waihi strike from the Federation viewpoint. A resolution of protest against the gaoling of the men and a demand for the release of the prisoners was put and carried, about a hundred voting, for it, and very few against it. An amendment declining to express an opinion was not seconded.
