FIVE WORKING DAYS A WEEK.

EXPERIMENTS IN AUSTRALIA. Sydney, September 7. A West Australian saddler, Mr. Arundel, of Perth, who employs 74 hands, lately instituted the five-days-a-week work scheme, which is in operation in several- big establishments in Sydney, and says that the results have been exceedingly satisfactory. Mr. Arundel's employees knock off work at half-past five on Friday nights. and do not start again till a quarter to eight on Monday mornings. ,l I found Saturday work was of little use to me," he said. "When the men turned up at work they could do little but talk of races or football events that were to take place in the aiternoon, and so I determined to give them two days' holidays and make up the 48 hours during the five days of the week. They start at 7.45 in the morning, only have half an hour for lunch, and go home at 5.30 p.m. The result is that they are happier, and I get better and more work done on other days."
