A BANKRUPT COUNTY. By Telegraph.-—Press Association. Whangarei, Last Night. The County Council was asked to sign a joint and several guarantee, to provido for £1771 in excess of the overdraft limit at the Bank of New Zealand. Four Councillors signed, but two have refused to sign, wliilrst three declined to say whether they would sign or not. Now £4OOO is required to carry on until the rate is struck, but the members have refused to sign for the amount unless all are unanimous. One Councillor refused because the meeting wa« open to the press, so the bond was not entered into. As no funds are available to pay for getting the rate-books compiled, it is impossible to receive any revenue, and the Bank will not honor <iny more cheques, so the County is practically bankrupt.
