DESERTING HUSBANDS.
A /rood flea] of attention is heinggiven by the Victorian Attorney-General' to the question of compelling husbands who desert their wives and children to properly discharge their duties, and in the coming session of the State Parliament a Bill will be introduced which it is expecBill will have far-reaching effects. At the present time, if a man leaves his wifx> and children without support, he can be dealt with only by being arrested and returned to his former place of abode. It may be that the man is in work, and his arrest does no good to anybody. This new Bill will provide for the man's wages being garnished just whenever lie happens to be in work, even if he is residing in another State. South Australia and Tasmania hsive already passed Bilk on this .subject, and .the other States are ifnder promise to carry similar legislation. Mr Brown does not see any remedy at present for the .cases complained of by the council of the Victorian Association . of Ladies' Benevolent Societies, of men who do not !ea\e their homes, but make little xtr no effort to get work, and thus' increase the calls on charity. If the wives would compel husbands of this class to leave their homes they would be guilty, of constructive desertion, and could "then he proceeded against under the existing law. ' B
