When the chairman of the Chambers of Commerce Congress, at Newcastle, announced the result of the Midlothian election, the delegates cheered for several Minutes. CANVASSING BY AEROPLANE. London. September 11. An aeroplane in Midlothian scattered leaflets in remote districts. PRESS criticism;. Received 12, 5.5 p.m. London. September 12. The Conservative evening papers ire jutilant at the capture of the Mecca of Radicalism. The Liberal papers attribute the result to a split in the Progressive ranks. The Unionists are bound to win a few byeelections under such circumstances. THE UNIONIST VICTORY. THE GOVERNMENT STANDS FIRM. Received 12, 11.45 p.m. London. September 12. Major Hope attributes the result of the election to a desire for an amendment of the Insurance Act rather than a dislike of Home Rule or Disestablishment. The Liberals bitterly comment on the folly of the Laborites in presenting the »eat to the Unionists. Mr. Churchill, speaking at Dundee, •aid thaf no split vote at bye-elections and no Tory abuse would prevent the Government passing the Home Rule and Insurance Bills. They might be improved in detail, but they were irrevocable, because they were indispensable to the twelve million policies already alive.
