THE VOLPLANE DISASTER,
lA. Received 11, 8 p.m. London, September 11. Lieutenant Bettington and Hotchkiss belonged to the Flying Corps and were proceeding to the manoeuvres, volplaning, and after stopping the engine were thrown out and fell into a stream.

Hotchkiss was piloting the British monoplane which recentlv won the War Office prize of £SOO. During the descent he backed sharply and one of the planes collapsed. The final entry in his diary, rqack: frOver Oxford; struck-a-rainstorm." It closes with a very unfinished word, presumably '"windy."
