A Slinnghai letter from Wenchow states tliat the Hoods on August 29 readied the proportions of a tidal wave at Chunchow and overwhelmed Esingtien. Ten thousand were drowned. The floods entirely destroyed Koneo and washed away several small towns. The river Wenchow on the morning of the 30th was a terrible sight, the ruins of numberless homesteads lloating swiftly ■eawards, whereon were crouched men, women and children. It is exceedingly difficult to estimate (lie loss, but thirty or forty thousand have been drowned.
