Mr. D. O. L. liowdeii, of the New Plymouth branch of the Bank of New Zealand, will leave for Masterton this week on' transfer. A motion of sympathy, as follows, was passed by the Borough Council last nig'ht: ''That this Council .place on record its profound regret at the great loss which has been sustained by the Salvation Army and the civilised world by the death of the late General Booth, and tenders to the relatives' of the deceased its sincere sympathy in the bereavement they have sustained." _ Mr. F. F. Hockley, a well-known Rangitikei settler, who has sold his farm and intends settling in the Bay of Plenty district, was entertained-at Feilding on Saturday by the settlers of Parihikura, Sandon block and Rewa. Mr. D. 11. Guthrie, M.P., on behalf of the settlors, presented Mr. Hockley with a gold watch ,an<l chain suitably inscribed, also a 'purse of sovereigns, whilst Mrs. Hockley was the recipient of a solid silver teaset and salver. The Rev. J. E. Watts-Ditchfield, vicar of the parish of St. James the Less, Bethnal Green, London, an envoy of the Church of England Men's Society, visited Christehurcli oil Saturday, and a conference with the local C.E.M.S. members wars held in the afternoon. The visitor gave a lengthy but interesting address dealing with the aims and objects of the Church of England Men's Society -and the manner in which they are to be attained. The Rev. Mr. Watts-Ditchfield is a speaker of considerable power. He gets right to the heart of a subject without unnecessary preliminary. His remarks are marked by considerable directness of statement and many touches of real humor. At the close of his address the eaker answered a number of questio' ..ring upon the work of the society.
