THE ORIGIN OF LIFE. j In view'Of'the scientific disclosures by Professor Shaefer, at the British Asr sociation's meeting at Dundee this week, with' regard to the origin of life, special interest attaches to t'hq lecture by. Mr Philip Hereford: in the Whiteley Ha(ll, last night, on the relationship between man and ape, and the rest of the animal kingdom. 11l an interesting manner the lecturer, ! who is a member of and a' contributor to the American Academy of Social Science, sought to show that each one of us is the lineal descendant of j itst such an animal as the Orang Outailg. Aided by a series of specially prepared slides, Mr Hereford gave a number of absorbingly interesting details which foe claimed connected each one of us : with the monkey tribe. It is not everyone' who is in a position to vouch for the fact that human beings are occasionally born with tails, and all are not as familiar as the lecturer is with the hundred little tricks of personality that we share with the "men of the woods." There aVe, as t'lie speaker pointed out, strange little survivals, not only of ape characteristics, but also of those of lizards and fish. Mr Hereford will lecture again tonight, when lie will break fresh ground, dealing with that most interesting study embryology, and with the distinctly animal organs to be found in man. ' 1
