Mr. John Fisher, of Otautau, was yesterday appointed chairman of the Southland Education J3oard for the ensuing year. ilr. William Jones, of Kaimata, lias been elected to the vacancy on the Clifton County Council, caused by the resignation of Mr. J. C. Clecaon. A telegram from Christchurch states that the wife of W. McArley, general secretary of the New Zealand Loco' Engine-drivers' Firemen and Cleaners' Association, died yesterday. The following appointments are gazetter.—Mr. W. Nicholson (temporary officer) to be an assistant meat inspector, Department of Agriculture; Mr. 0. H, Barker, inspector under the Slaughtering and Inspection Act. District Land Registrars: Mr. F. W. Broughton, Marlborough; Mr. W. Johnston, Nelson; Mr. W. P. Morgan, Westland.
