DOCTOR ARRESTED.
, A CIIRISTCIIUKCH SENSATION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christehurch, Last Night. A sensation was caused in the city today when it was noised abroad that Dr. C. J. Russell had been arrested on a serious charge. Dy. Russell is a member of the North Canterbury Education Board, and a prominent member of several local societies. He was arrested by Detectives Ward and Gibson on a warrant charging liim with having unlawfully used an Instrument. This afternoon Dr. Russell was formally charged before Mr. Bishop, S.M., with having, on June 28, 1012, unlawfully used an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage. Chief Detective Bishop prosecuted. Accused was not represented by counsel. On the application of the police, accused was formally remanded until September 10, and it is stated that a further remand to September 16 will be applied, for. Accused applied for bail. The Chief Detective urged that the suretics should be substantial. Bail was allowed accused in one surety of £2OO and one surety of £4OO. Dr. Charles James Russell is now 83 years of age. He studied medicine at Anderson's University, Glasgow, gaining the degrees of F.P.S. and L.S.A. in 1860. He took his diploma at Syracuse University, New York, in 1870. In Christehurch he was prominent in quasi-public life, taking particular interest in social and educational matters. At present he is a mem.her of the Education Board of North Canterbury. He held a prominent place on the School Committees' Association, and was an active member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Horticultural Society, and a great number of other oiganisations. Dr. Russell is a West Indian by birth and has been practising in Christehurch for some years. Many years ago he was convicted of a similar offence to the one he is now charged with and served a sentence of some years' imprisonment in Lyttelton gaol. On his release he resumed practice in Christehurch, and although not recogaised by the regular faculty he had lived down his original offence and had built up a large and lucrative practice. He was associated with several public bodies and had the reputation of being one of the broadestminded and most liberal of citizens in all public movements having for their object the advancement of the welfare of the city. g ■
