SERIOUS RAILWAY ACCIDENT
DETAILS OF THE COLLISION. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, September 5. The collision occurred about 5.10. If the show train had stopped a few yards sooner the disaster would have been avoided, because the suburban train would then have been able to cross in front, but if it had occurred a few seconds earlier or later one engine would have crashed into the carriages of the other train and then the loss oi life would have been heavier. The engine of the show train was running tender first, which in the opinion of a railWay expert minimised the consequences, as the tender acted as a buffer. Wilson was aged 72, and was a retired farmer. McDonald was aged 61, ami was a stock and estate agent. A LIST OP THE INJURED. Received 6, 1.10 a.m. Melbourne, September 5. A large number more names have been ad<lcd to the list of injured, mostly minor cases and people who had proceeded to their homes unreported at the time of the accident. It has been found necessary to amputate the leg of a man named Smith, one of the injured.
