Fletcher, a regular Republican candidate, failed to secure election by a sufficient majority. He polled 17,000, against 12,000 polled for Howe (a Democrat). Metzger (Progressive) only secured 1700 votes. The Republican House will now be obliged to elect a governor. Political students emphasise the fact that when Vermont's Republican majority falls below 25,000 the Republican party is always defeated at the following Presidential election. Received 5,12.40 a.m. New York, September 4. The Progressive vote in Vermont was 10,000. Earlier returns were erroneous. The Progressives are elated.
