AUTOMOBILE RATES.

EXCESSIVE CHARGES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Saturday Night. A Christchurch deputation froim the Canterbury Automobile Association waited on the Minister of Marine with a request that lie would use his influence with the Union Company to secure a reduction of the freight rates on motors privately owned between Lyttelton and Wellington. The deputation stated that the rates were the same as between Sydney and 'Wellington and Auckland and ' Vancouver. Mr. Fisher said that the charge was extortionate, and he would make representations to the company. The Government did not control the tariff, which showed the evil of monopolies. The only way to meet this monopoly was the introduction of a State ferry service. If the Union Company desired to prevent State competition it should be reasonable.
