The present is the greatest flood for a quarter of a century. The harvest fields are submerged. Many houses at Huntingdon are flooded, and the inhabitants in parts of Leicestershire are living in the upper stciey* trf ibeir homes, the lower »tore?s bting invaded by water. There have been severe losses of s : ,jck in the Midlands. A PHENOMENAL DOWNPOUR. NORWICH IN DARKNESS. TRAINS HELD UP. Received 28, 9.25 p.m. London, August 28. A telegram dated "Norwich, Monday," arrived last night, stating that it had rained incessantly for seventeen hours. There were several feet of water in many streets, and boats were plying. Hundreds of people had quitted their houses, and taken refuge in the schools on higher levels. Food was being conveyed thither. Business is at a standttill. The rainfall for twelve hours was 6.32 inches, and it is still raining. The rising waters yesterday stopped a majority of the dynamos, whereupon the electric lighting failed, and the city Was plunged into darkness. ( Part of the mound whereon the castle stands has been washed away. Kings Lynn and the East Coast resorts are still isolated. There have been further floods in Warwickshire. A goods train fell through a collapsed viaduct at Fakenham. y Several country railway bridges in Norfolk have been destroyed. NORWICH SUBMERGED. WATER FAMINE FEARED. Received 28, 11 p.m. London, August 28. At Norwich on Wednesday the floods in the poorer quarters were thirteen feet deep. Seven thousand people are homeless. A water famine is threatened, the waterworks at the pumping station bein? flooded and the machinery useless. The high reservoir contains two days' supply.
