EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tlifi monthly meeting of the Ta/ranaki Education Board was held last evening. The members present were: Messrs. H. Trimble (chairman), A. Morton, W. L. Kennedy, A. H. Halcombe, W. Rogers, R. Masters, J. Young, G. A. Adlam, and the Rev. Mr. Bradbury. SCHOOL FOR ONAERO. The Chief Inspector (Mr. W. A. Ballantyne) reported that he had visited the Onaero district and met a deputation of settlers with regard to the application for the establishment of a school, liis report was favorable and the Board decided to make application to the Department for a grant for the purchase of the site and the erection of ia- school and residence, provided a suitable site could be secured at a reasonable cost. TECHNICAL REPORT. ; Reporting on the matters brought -under the notice of the Board last month by the Technical Advisory Committee, the director of the school, Mr. W. A. Ballantyne, recommended that, as an effort would shortly be made to have a laundry class started, the work of connecting the tubs with the drain, should be proceeded with. An additional typewriter had been purchased. Regarding the application of a phonog. aph for the teaching of the Spanish language, the director stated that eight students had been awaiting the formation of a class in this language. He recommended that the matter be left in the hands of the new director (to be appointed), with power to secure a complete phonographic outfit if it was found that eight students were prepared to guarantee their attendance at the class. —The report was adopted. The Chief Inspector reported that the Department had refused to recognise the day school classes as a day technical school, but had recognised them as technical schools. In view of the report of Mr. Isaacs, who had spoken favorably on the prospects of a day technical school in New Plymouth, he had again made application to the Department to have Itho day school recognised. GENERAL. The Board considered in committee two petitions received from country districts—one from a school committee and the other from a number of householders —asking that the conduct of the teachers stationed at their respective schools should be inquired into. The chairman reported that he had visited SVaitui and had made arrangements whereby an additional area of an acre could be obtained for a horse paddock, which was sufficient for the committee's requirements. He had authorised the committee to erect the necessary fence and repair the road fences on the understanding that the Board would pay for the material, the committeo to provide the labor.
