THE KARANGAHAKE STRIKE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. ,Mr. Stansfields, superintendent of the Talisman Consolidated Mine,'has telegraphed to the Auckland Stock Exchange: "A strike is on here because we gave work to a member of the Waihi Engine-drivers' Union. SENSATIONAL DEVELOPMENT. Waihi,'Tuesday. A sensational development in connection with the Waihi strike occurred at Karangahake yesterday afternoon. The facts are that a member of the Waihi Engine-drivers' Union was engaged yesterday by the Talisman Company for winding work. The underground miners, going on for the afternoon shift, refused to go into the mine with him. Superintendent Stansfields explained to the men that the engine-driver had been engaged in the ordinary way, and as long as he was found to be capable lie would not be discharged. The men then decided to cease work, stating that as long as the driver was employed they would not resume. Consequently ail work is stopped. The battery also stopped at 8 o'clock this morning. The stoppage throws 300 men out of work. The Karangahake miners are a branch of the Thames Miners' Union, which is working under an arbitration award. A meeting of the branch will be held at noon to-day to consider the position. Waihi, Tuesday. At a mass meeting of the Waihi miners a resolution was passed endorsing the Karangahake strike.
