Edward Simmons was committed "for trial to-day on his confession of having issued valueless cheques and stolen dia° mond rings, the property of Pascoc, jeweller. Simmons in May last sent a telephone, message to Pascoe ordering a number of diamond rings to be sent to the residence of Mr. Nathan, a I prominent citizen. He met the messen-* ger at the gate, representing himself to I be Mr. Nathan, and took possession of ! the rings. He then disappeared. Several ' rings were subsequently pawned. Next ' the accused cashed forged cheques for substantial sums and disappared. \t Timaru he was arrested for passin» : valueless cheques, and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. He then confessed to the theft of the rings and forgeries at Auckland.
