AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.
THE QUESTION OF ITS LOCATION. By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Wellington, Friday. ■A deputation representing .Mtinawat.i settlers waited on the Prime Minister to-day to request that the Agriculture' College which the Government proposes to establish should, be erected, at Palmerston >iortii. It was urged by +he deputation that there could be no more. suitable' pt'a'co in the North Island for an agricultural College than at Palmerston North.
The Hoti, W. P. Massey, in .reply, said that .Parliament had yet to assent, to the proposal for a college, though he did not anticipate any di%ulty in that dK rection. He was convinced that the site would have to be -on the main line of railway, and that it 'would liave to be easy of access. At present he had four localities in mind,,each possessing individual., advantages, ,viz., Palmerston North, Mart.on, Weraroa and Ruakura. At the .two latter .places the Government had considerable areas- of land, and the establishment of a college there would obviate the expenditure of a large sum of money in the purchasing of a site. Regarding experimental farms, he frankly said that aome. of them were not worth carrying on, and he thought several of the Government farms would have to be dispensed with, and the proceeds devoted to the' establishment of an. agricultural college. He intended to go thoroughly into the whole matter during the recess, and would personally risit all the sites suggested.
