CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT.
LONDON REPRESENTATIVE APPOINTED. , By Telegraph—Own Correspondent. Wellington, Last Night. Mr. Henry R. Spence, Collector of Customs at l'nvereargill, has been appointed to represent the New Zealand Customs Department in London. lie will leave for London about the end of next month; and it is expected that hi.s work there will secure many extra thousands of pounds for the Dominion. He. will make su<jh.inquiries as will enable the dutiable value of imported goods to be more fairly assessed at this end, and also throw much light on the origin of imported goods. It is suggested that goods come into New Zealand at the lowest rate because they are improperly described as being of British origin, and in this respect the newly-appointed expert will be called on to fulfil very important duties. He Avill also be expected to afford valuable assistance to the New Zealand authorities in carrying out the law prohibiting the importation of prison-made goods. Mr. Spence has been thirty years in the service.
