THE TEST MATCH. LOW SCORING. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright London, August 21. The weather was dull and chilly and the ground softish when play was resumed in the test match. Dean and Barnes were in charge of the bowling. The batting was quiet and the field was close, up for Barnes. Bardsley took 25 minutes making two singles. Woolley replaced Barnes at 77, and Bardsley made leg hits for four and three from the first over. Barnes replaced Dean at 85. The batting was admirably watchful. Woolley, in his second over, got Kelleway leg before. He was 115 minutes at the wickets, and his play Was excellent under the circumstances. He hit five fours.—Three for 90. A collapse followed, the rest adding 21. Jennings came in next and easily succumbed | in Woolley's third over without scoring, i —Four for 00. Minnett filled the vac-1 ancy and was easily caught at point close in in the fifth over off Woolley. He did not score.—Five for 92. Smith filled the vacancy. Bardsley hit a fourer in the. slips, and the same over was bowled by a breakback from Barnes which he did not try to play, and whicn took his leg stump. He was in 100 minutes and played a masterly and chanceless innings.—Six for 90. Matthews came in anil the century went up in 150 minutes. Smith was taken at the wickets in the seventh over off Woolley. —Seven for 104. Whitty came in and the next over Matthews hit a tremendous skier to short mid-on, where Fry captured it.—Eight for 104. Carkeek, the last man, had "reached five when rain caused 35 minutes' delay. Since the bowling had been changed Barnes had taken three wickets for one run and Woolley four for two. On resuming play Carkeek was easily caught at mid-on. The innings lasted 175 minutes. Woolley and Barnes had splendid averages. During the lunch interval rain fell. The scores were:—

Rhodes and Hobbs faced Whitty and Macartney. The weather was gloomy and the ground soft. Misfortune came early, as Rhodes, playing forward, lost his middle stump in the second over of Whitty's.—One for 7. Spooner filled the vacancy and was taken first ball' easily in the slips.—Two for 7. Fry came in, and when two had been added to the score rain delayed the game, which was resumed at 4 o'clock. The weather was gloomy but the wicket was ■easier. Macartney and Whitty were still the bowlers. Hobbs made 11 off Macartney's first over, receiving a slight strain while running. Hazlitt replaced Macartney at 36. Hobbs put a six, off Whitty, into the Australians' enclosure, otherwise the batting was quiet. The 50 took 70 minutes. One run later Hobbs was smartly taken at point after an excellent display.—Three for 51. Woolley came next but did not last long; he was bowled for 4.—Four for 56. Heame filled the vacancy. Play was- suspended at 5.2-0 owing to the bad light, and then there was a downpour and stumps were drawn. There were 13,000 present, of whomJ9l4 paid. The match wjll be continued to-morrow. AN INTERESTING CHARITY. Loruloii, August 21. Three bills, bearing the autographs of the English, Australian and South African players, are being sold to maintain, for a year, a cot in Treloar's Cripples' Home at Alton.
