ALLEGED JAPANESE PURCHASE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 22, 11.1-5 p.m., Melbourne, August 22. In reply to a question regarding the rumor that Japan was negotiating with France for the purchase of New Caledonia, it wa« officially stated in the House that nothing was known of the authenticity of the report. The available; information indicated that four to fife thousand Japanese were resident in New Caledonia, against 1200 to 1500 five years ago. This was the foundation for thfe allegation. Most of the new immigrants were Japanese ex-soldiers.
