THE SIMPLE LIFE.
CHIDLEY'S CASE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 20, 9.30 p.m. Sydney, August 20. Mr. MeGowen has received a report from two members of the Asylums Visiting Committee, endorsing the previous official opinions with regard to Chidley. Mr. MeGowen has instructed the Inspec-tor-General of the Insane to make a special report. Subscriptions to the Chidley fund are generous. Received 21. 12.40 a.m. Sydney. August 20. In the Assembly, in reply to a question, Mr. MeGowen 'stated that Chidley's friends had made no representations to him. Mr. Meagher moved the adjournment to discuss the case. which seriously affected the liberty of the subject. ' Tlie papers tabled in the House, he said, were incomplete and meaningless. It was the duty of the Government to make them complete. Mr. Levy considered that a mistake had been made, and the sooner it was rectified the better. Chidley's friends should be given a fair chance of defending him against the charge of insanity. In the Assembly, Dr. Arthur said that Chidley was suffering from mental abnormality, lie was quite convinced that it was not for the public good that he should be allowed to speak in public and before mixed audiences. He was convinced that if he was liberated on a pledge not to lecture, within a few days he would be expounding the preposterous theory he held. Mr. MeGowen, referring to the repeated charges that Chidley was arrested because of the way he dressed, said that if he though that had anything to do with his incarceration he would liberate him immediately. He detailed the steps that had been taken and were being taken in the case. The motion for adjournment was negatived.
