MINERS' FEDERATION. STRIKE FUND DEFICIT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, August 18. The strike fund of the Federation of Tradr Unions, which usually amounts to ,1150,000, now shows a deficit of £9OOO. It has been decided to retain a double contribution and pay benefits for eight instead of twelve weeks. BIG BATCH OF FINES. London, August 18. The Reedhugh colliery proprietors sued over three hundred hewers for five shillings apiece. It was alleged that they stopped work before they had earned the minimum wage. The bulk of them were ordered to pay 4s 6d each. ENGINEERS AND SHIPPING COMPANIES. Received 19, 10 p.m. Sydney, August 19. The Arbitration Court has commenced the hearing of the dispute between the Australasian Institute of Marine Engine rs and the steamship companies, including the Union Company and the Huddrirt Parker Company, relating to rates bf pay, hours of labor, and tenure of employment.
