THE TERRITORIALS.

CAMP TIME. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Between sixty and seventy farmers assembled yesterday to discuss with Genem! Godley the question of the best time of the year for military camps. General Godley is indisposed at Clvristchurch, and Colonel Heard attended in his stead. The conference lasted some time. On the main point—the date of camps—Colonel Heard .said that the most suitable time for the Defence Department was autumn and Christmas to New Year. It was suggested by the farmers to this that it was unfair to young men at the time of the Christmas holidays, and it would make camps unpopular. October was suggested and a vote taken resulted: Christmas 0, October 19, autumn 15 (April or May), many not voting, and the leading farmers voted for the autumn. Colonel Heard offered a concession to country regiments (including mixed town and country) to dispense with most of the evening parades, which were troublesome to country men, in return for lengthening the period of the camp from nine to fifteen days, and a parade every two months. This was almost unanimously approved of, there being only two or three dissentients.

Colonel Heard will report the result of the conference to General Godley.
