Mr. G. 11. Saunders is''health, recruiting at Rotorua. Mr. M. J. Brennan, of Opunakej is spending a few days in town. . ~ Mr. 0. Carter and Mr. G. G. Millar returned from \VcHington on Saturday evening. Mr. W. E. Bowden, of the New Plymouth railway stall', leaves early this week under transfer to Rangataiia. Mr. J. Ferck, who has been in the service of the Qpunake Co-operative Dairy Co. for over five''years, the last three as butter-maker (says the Opunalce Times), has been appointed from out of a large number of applicants as manager of the TJriti Valley Co-operative .Dairy Company.

The following changes iu tire police force are announced:—Sub-Inspector Oruickshunk, from Dunedin to Timaru, to replace Sub-Inspector Phair, who has been promoted to inspector and transferred to G-reyinouth; Senior-Sergeant Fouhy, Ashburton, has been promoted to sub-inspector and transferred to Dunedin; Sergeant A. T. Emerson will go to Ashburton.

Mr. Frank Morton, in a running commentary on current affairs in Auckland, says that "it is a foregone conclusion that Auckland will not again return Mr. Dickson or Mr. Payne. Mr. Gunsou will probably stand for one seat, and it is virtually decided that Mr. C. E. Major (formerly member for Hawera) will contest Mount Eden. Grey Lynn is one of tho uncertainties, but people on the spot <lo not consider that Mr. Payne will bo returned again." News has been received in Dunedin of the death by drowning in Colombia, Central America, of Mr. John Chisholm, eldest son of Alexander Chisholm, Outram. Mr. Chisholm was a distinguished jraduate of Otago University, having taken his B.Sc. degree and passed through the School of Mines. After some experience of mining at Waihi and in Western Australia, he went, under engagement to a London syndicate, to, British Guiana. There (says the Otago Daily Times) he was the only one of the iparty who withstood- malarial fever, and managed to complete his term of engagement. From the tropica Mr. Chisholm next went to Siberia to explore a large tract of country conceded for mining purposes to a British company by the Russian proprietors. After completing his work there he was sent to Colombia, where, by the capsizing of a canoe on the River'Condola, he came to an untimely end on May- 12th last.
