NETWORK OF CANALS.

GER MA NT'S DEVELOPMENT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London. August 15. Heir Koenig. British Consul-General in Westphalia, reports that the German Government, is building a network of canals to cope with the increasing railway traffic. All the rivers running from south to north into the Baltic and North Seas will be joined by a large canal from east to west, connecting the Rhine with the Emden. The Rhine will also he made navigable to Basle, while the Moselle. Saar and Lahn will be deepened and canalised. This policy is due to the success of the DortmundEms canal, traffic on which has quadrupled in the last decade without lessening the income of the State railways. Negotiations arc proceeding with the Netherlands. Switzerland and Austria regarding the proposed heavy dues on river traffic.
