ENTERTAINMENTS.

EMPIRE PICTURES. The enmity of kin against kin wheita question of principles arises was dramatically depicted in the Empire Theatrelast night, before a large audience, by the screening of a magnificent Kalcm. drama, entitled "The Tide of. Battle."" The story hinges on the American Civil • War, which was marked by some of tho most sanguinary fights in "history. The film is produced on a lavish scale, and is noteworthy for the fine spectacular effects and the attention paid to detail. "The Tide of Battle" is at once pathetic and soul-absorbing in its dramatic situations. It shares honors with another fine picture, in the shape of "The Prospector's Legacy," a stirring Western subject, around which is woven a wealth of romance. Something distinctly out of the ordinary run of domestic dramas is provided in "Just Like a Woman." Tho picturo i.s also responsible for some particularly good acting. "What Pate Ordained" is a drama, which portrays the dream of a srirl who has married the right man. The dream shows her what might have been her lot had she taken the name of the other fellow, who was once, by the way, a hot favorite for lier hand. Switzerland's superb scenery needs 110 advertising, and the picture shown last night of the ascent of the Matterhorn i.s perhaps the best that that country offers. On the instructive side, a film showing the Berlin Fire Brigade at work found much favor with those present. It is indeed a thrilling sight to witness this novel automobile brigade in full action. Perhaps the best comic study is "A Cure for Jealousy." but there are others, each with its ' special attraction. The current, programme of music is particularly fine. The orchestra has been reinforced bv the acquisition of the services of Mr. F. 0. Symes, who has just severed his connection with the Rotorua Government Professional Orchestra to join the staff of the Empire Theatre as first violinist. Ha comes with a big reputation.
