EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE. "THE TIDE OF BATTLE." An intensely dramatic Civil War story entitled ''The Tide of Battle" forms one of the principal features in to-night's new programme at the Empire. As every one knows, the American Civil War was not only marked by some of the most sanguinary fights in history, but the period of strife lasted for years. The tragedy of this war was the tragedy common to every form of civil strife—the enmity of km against kin; the severance of long friendships; the estrangement of blood relations. Civil war is the negation of home life—of fraternal friendships. This big feature, like all other Kalem films, is produced on lavish scale and with the utmost attention to detail, and contains a good plot, good acting, plenty of incident, and a strong love interest. But this is by no means the only star. The popular Essanay Co. are again to the fore witli one of their breezy Western stories entitled f'The
Prospector's Legacy." "What Fate Ordained" is a Lubin drama, and the A.B. Co. offer a unique romance in "Just like a woman." Magnificent scenery is contained in "The Ascent of the Matterhorn," and "The Berlin Fire Brigade" and "Arabian Customs" are films of great interest. The usual budget of comics comprises "A Cure for Jealousy" (Lubin 1000 ft.), "Tilly the Matchmaker," "An Original Legacy," and "The Fickle Spaniard." This programme will be ehown for three nights.
