STEAMER AGROUND.
IN THAMES RIVER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Yesterday. While steaming up the Thames river to Paeroa yesterday morning the Northern Company's steamer Taniwha struck a submerged object and settled on the bottom. The Taniwha was bound from Auckland to Paeroa, and left on Saturday night. A large number of passengers who were on board were landed without discomfort. The relief steamer Chelmsford, with two divers and a quantity of salvage gear, was dispatched last evening. Telegrams from Captain Sullivan state that a large hole has been torn in the after end of the vessel on the starboard side. The cargo is damaged, but it is expected that the vessel will be refloated without great difficulty after the divers have patched the hull.
