The Government is organising aeroplane competitions with a view to mail transportation along the Congo. A RECORD ALTITUDE. Received 11, 5.5 p.m. Ottawa, August 11. An altitude record for Canada is claimed by Oden Martin, of Boston, who attained a height of 6400 feet in a biplane. AIR AND WATER FLIGHTS. A NARROW ESCAPE. Received I'2, 12.15 a.m. London, August 11. MacLcan, a British, left Whitchurch and flew in a waterplane up the Thames, over the Tower Bridge and under the remaining bridges, bounding into the water under Blackfriars 'bridge and Waterloo bridge. He alighted at Westminster pier. Meanwhile Beaumont attempted to hydro-aeroplane above the water from Paris to London along the Seine and around the coast. He left Boulogne, but was immediately caught in a gust of wind and capsized two hundred yards from shore. He was rescued on the upturned keel.
