THE SUGAR CONVENTION. London, August 8. The Premier said he rejoiced in Britain's withdrawal from the Sugar Convention, which, he contended, secured Britain economical freedom without sacrifice, lie added that the cultivation of beet sugar might receive assistance from the development fund.
TEARING PROPAGANDISM. London. August 8. Mr. Raphael, Liberal member for South Derbyshire., in a letter to his constituents, referring to Mr. Lloyd George's land crusade, protests against tearing and raging pvopagandisni, which would cause unrest, damage trade and create a rift in the Liberal Party. THE MANCHESTER ELECTION. Loudon, August 8. The by-election for North-West Manchester, caused by the resignation of Sir George Kemp, resulted in the election of Sir' John Randies (Unionist), who obtained 5573 votes against 4371 for Mr. 11. Ewart. the Liberal candidate. •Received 0. 10.10 p.m. London, August 0. The North-West Manchester election was fought on the Home Rule and Disestablisliment questions. The Liberals failed to confine the issue to tariff reform. The defeat was primarily due to a dislike to the Insurance Bill, particularly to the clerk class, which the business section disliked, and Mr. Lloyd George's finance. Six hundred cars brought voters from holiday resorts. A correspondent of the Times suggests the adoption of New Zealand's system of absent voters' permits'.
