LABOR IN FIJI.

A PRANK STATEMENT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, August S. Mr. Turner, Mayor of Suva, who is visiting Sydney, replying to the question whether the 50,000 Indians now in Fiji constituted a danger, said his conviction was that if they had 100,000 it would be a distinct advantage to the progress of the colony. The country was a tropical one, and if it was going to compete with other countries in similar latitudes in the world's markets it must be placed on n similar footing as regards labor. The Fijians would work only when it suited them; they were unable to recruit Kanakas, and anyway tlwre was no more danger in introducing the coolie than the Kanaka, perhaps less, as the Indians were orderly and industrious.
