DR. MORRISON'S APPOINTMENT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 5, 9.15 pjn. London, August 5. The Daily Telegraph's Pekin correspondent states that much comment has been caused in the Legations on account of Dr. Morrison's appointment as political adviser to the President of China at a handsome salary. The Chinese Foreign Office disclaims responsibility for the appointment. Apparently the appointment was made by Yuan-Shi-Kai. The Vienna newspapers applaud Dr. Morrison's appointment as evidence of the sound sense of the Chinese.
A PARLOUS STATE. Port Darwin, August 5. The latest China papers report that chaos is supreme. The Chinese are firmly opposed to the appointment of foreign financial advisers. China must have money, 'but the scheme of patriotic subscriptions was a miserable fiasco. The Treasury is empty, the industries are largely paralysed, and internal divisions have arisen. China is in the tightest fix in her history.
