WORK AND WAGES.

THE WAIHI STRIKE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Yesterday. Mr. A. Triggs. Conciliation Commissioner. states that he is amazed at the condition into which Waihi has fallen. Businesses have, been ruined, and the town is half empty. Distress is frequent. and evident; people lui.'e sold valuable houses and furniture for a few pounds. In the town there is such a condition of stagnation and discomfort as he would never have believed in without the evidence of his own senses. Things could not possibly look worse. There was little .hope of any settlement until strike pay was stopped. The action of the Government in sending Commissioners to Waihi was greatly appreciated, as it held out promise of what might be done to hasten the end of the almost impossible position in an erstwhile prosperous centre.
