FOOTBALL.

Til]-] JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. CLIFTON BEATEN BY 24 POINTS. Waimate "made no race" of the championship final at Stratford yesterday, defeating Clifton by 24 points to nil. There was not a large" attendance of the publie. The ground was dry, and the day bright and pleasant. Neither team seemed to play up to its best form, but the Waimate men played with betn-r combination, and with a better knowledge of the game. The Waitara men had the advantage in loose forward rushes, but otherwise were outclassed. The Southerners made the pace merry at the start, even with a strong sun in their eyes, and Clifton forced. The Greens smartened up, but were soon defending again, and Waimate had another kick at goal. The score was disallowed, owing to the placer handling the ball a second time. Then they were forced twice, as the result of injudicious kicking by Clifton. The first try was scored by Meuli, who got the ball after a line run and welltimed pass by Wallace. No goal was kicked. Young again landed a goal from a mark, but, not kicking over the mark, the score was disallowed. Meuli landed a goal from a free kick. There were now some good rallies, but the men from Manaia were seen to have the better chance of winning. Just before halftime Clifton had hard luck, a line kick by Waka going just outside. Resuming the second spell, Clifton made things warm for a while, and kept the Blues defending, but soon there was a lightning change, and C. Meuli, gathering the I ball up in the ruck, tut through and [scored behind the post*, Young adding the major points.—Waimate 11—0. Young soon afterwards narrowly missed potting a goal. At this stage there was a good deal of obstruction on both sides, and one of the Clifton puck was seen three times to deliberately charge an opponent who had rid himself of the ball. Clifton had an easy shot at gaol, rightin front, but the ball rolled and the kick was poor. They tried some passing, but most of the passes were bad, and the catching was worse, and the Blues rushed them downficld, where Duly scored from a pass from Meuli. Young'goalcd. Daly, wlio is a bit of a greyhound, and plays in Prince's place in the Waimate seniors on Saturday at Hawera, notched another couple of tries, one of which Young goaled, bringing the score to Waimate 24. Clifton 0. Mr. Petty was referee.
