WELLINGTON (27) v. SOUTH ISLAND (18). By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The representative Rugby football match, Wellington v. the South Island country team, was played here to-day. Wellington won by 27 points to 18. NORTH ISLAND (G) v. SOUTHLAND (3). Invcrcargill, Last Night. The Southland reps, played the first game of the season to-day in opposition to the North Island combined country team. The weather was dull and threatening, and there was a heavy shower hear half-time, which made the "ball and the ground greasy. The local team were first to score, Henderson goaling from a placed penalty kick. The visitors retaliated quickly, N.eill gaining a try from a scramble at the posts, but the kick failed.—Southland 3, North Island 3. After a strenuous period and in the second spell, Kaiapara was let off by the tacklerg, anil made a good opening, Ford scoring after an excellent passing rush. Lennard failed with the kick.—North Island 0, Southland 3. Subsequently, Southland made a strong effort to equalise, and although almost successful on several occasions, failed to penetrate a long line of defence, and the game resulted: North Island 6, Southland 3. The game was an interesting one, but was mostly confined to the forwards. The visitors showed fair ba«k combination, but the Southland rear-guard will be altered in view of the match to come in the North Island. The forwards played at a fast pace throughout, but were in no marked manner superior to the home pack.

The plav-off between Clifton and Waimate for the first junior championship will take place at Stratford this afternoon. The Clifton fifteen will comprise: Waka, Pankhurst, George, Lawrence, W. Lash. Xtoddart, Pitzsimmons, Parr, Limmer. Catchpole, Kingi, Bristol, Spurdle, Hicks, and another.
