Lord Bcauohamp, president of the International Congress of Health, which was attended by 350 Anglo-German scientists, expressed Britain's desire for friendly relations with Germany. He h*p«d that the only rivalry would be a, peaceful one of science. TURKISH POLITICS. Constantinople. July 26. The receipt of the militarists' unsigned letter demanding the closing of the Chamber produced disorder. The Government is endeavoring to discover the author of the letter. AMERICAN WOOL TARTFF. Washington. July 26. A compromise on the Wool Tariff Revision Bill, introduced by Senator Penrose as a substitute for the Democratic Bill prepared by the House of Representatives, passed the Senate by 34 to 32, the Progressive Republicans joining the Democrats in order to carry the Bill. The La Follette Wool Bill was carried and the Penrose Bill thus rejected.
THE BANK OF COMMERCE. Sydney, July 20. At the half-yearly meeting of the. Bank of Commerce a net profit of £58,852 was shown. A dividend 0f222y 2 per cent, was declared, and £10,684 carried forward. NEW STEAMSHIP LINE. London, July 26. A proposal is afloat to establish n direct shipment service from Hull, probably to Victoria and Queensland. The Government has been asked to join with New South Wales in subsidising the service, A SUDDEN DEATH. Melbourne, July 26. Mr. W. A. Richards, ex-Governor of the State of Wyoming, who recently arrived with American land-seekers, died suddenly from angina pectoris.
A MAD SWIMVITNO MISTRESS. Copenhagen, July 23. A swimming mistress, becoming suddenly demented, induced thirty girls at Helsinborg to follow her seaward towards Elsinore. Motor boats rescued all. The mistress has been placed in an asylum.
