Le Matin states that at Germany's instigation Italy is laying down six super-Dreadnoughts, of which two will be begun by the end of 1912, and that Austria-Hungary will also lay down three. A PARISIAN APACHE. Paris, July 24. An apache named Sauret, sou of General Sauret, has been sentenced to five years' imprisonment at Douai for a series of assaults and robberies. His comrade, named De-la-Chappelle, belonging to an aristocratic family, has been sentenced to two years' imprisonment. CHRISTMAS'ISLAND SOLD. San Francisco, July 24. Christmas Island has been sold to an unnamed buyer. Father Rougier negotiated the sale from the Greig family, who were owners of the island, which is reputed to be the original of Stevenson's Treasure Island. PLOT FOR ASSASSINATION. Vienna, July 24. Advices from St. Petersburg state that the police have discovered Koreans in Russia who had conspired to assassinate Prince Katsura during his propored tour in Europe. A GAMBLING CLUB. London, July 24. Of forty persons arrested in the gambling club at Islington, several have been remanded and the others released A HANDSOME DONATION. London, July 24. Jacob Horwitz, of Berlin, formerly a member of the Queensland Parliament has donated £7500 to Warwick Hospital.
A MINE FLOODED. New York, July 24. In consequence of the bursting of a mountain-side reservoir the water rushed into the shaft of a brick and coal mine at Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Fourteen miners were drowned.
