A BOY IN A SAFE.
AND HOW THEY GOT HIM OUT. By .Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. The news that a boy was shut up inside a safe in His Majesty's Aroade tonight soon drew a crowd to the vicinity, and caused some excitement, and not a little alarm. Some boys were skylarking l round a safe, which had been left by a j tenant of the buildings in the passage* | way preparatory to being installed in his office. One of the lads got into the Bafe, whereupon some of his companions slammed the door upon him. To their consternation they were unable to open it again. The handle of the door wag broken, and they had no means of releasing their imprisoned companion. A» appeal was made to a bystander and a constable was fetched. Efforts were made with the aid of a screw-driver, a chisel and a hammer to prise the door open' These amateur attempts at safe-breaking were watched by an ever-increasing crowd for three-quarters of an hour, and as the minutes passed many anxious expressions were heard as to the safety of th« captive boy. Eventually, after a locksmith had been sought and burglar's tools desired in vain, the caretaker of the theatre arrived on the scene, and with the aid of a cold chisel managed to turn the handle of the safe door and pulling it open, released the imrenile prisoner. The latter was covered with perspiration, and in an evident state of partial collapse His reappearance was hailed with delight by his companions" who bor e him off in triumph after what had been a most unenviable experience.
