Horn rur Importer. MEN AND MOODS
Glorious weather, and three or four (lays of it! It has put quite a different complexion oil affairs generally. Ever noticed liow a man's business outlook is affected by the weather? Meet him on one of those wretched, rainy, cold, blustering days that have been only too common latterly, and he'll tell you the j town is going to the dogs, or to the : deuce, or some other place whose name, j style or title commences with the fourth ! letter of the alphabet, lie has never known such a week before in the matter of business, dull, flat, and unprofitable, nor such a day as the day on which he unburdens himself to you; nor in the whole of his experience has he ever seen such a downpour of rain, or so much of it "'oil end" as now; nor the streets in such shocking order; nor the water supply as bad; or so many bad debts and bankruptcies; nor so few people travelling; and so on. There is no doubt that many men go on in this strain till they are blue as the very ''blues" themselves. They get "the hump," and give it to as many as they can. Someone prescribes for him, and he takes sixpennyworth of brightness-producer in a tumbler! See the same man on a day like yesterday. He is all smiles Rubs his hands with all the exuberant glee of a Frenchman. Wants to "shout" morning tea—and you accept. He fairly beams at you across the -teapot and the pikelet. Talks about the weather and its glories just as if .he had had the fashioning of it himself. Glorious day for business. Best morning's cash takings for two years, "at this season, of course," he adds, when | lie sees remonstrance in .your eye. He J feels inclined to compliment' the borough engineer on the state .of the streets, and forgets to growl about the Borough Council. Tells you a "snorting" yarn that a "traveller" 'told him the. other day. and laughs heartily at it himself until a crumb going "the wrong' way" pulls him up, and he coughs wildly. The same man, yet different. A wry-faced pessimist one day, a sunbeam the next. His gladness is infectious. Everybody was glad yesterday and Sunday. Ail Stratford and his sisters and his 'cousins and his aunts appeared to be out walking, cycling, driving,; or motoring 1 on Sunday The Ngaere'gardens were the objective of most and the monkeys had an unusually largQ circle'of winder -admirers • ■ .
STRAY PARAGRAPHS ; Borough coiincillors are "up and doing." Ait, least, some of them are. The threat of one of our civic fathers that he intended making himself conversant with every portion of every street in the borough, and the assertion of another that he had just concluded a pilgrimage with tile same' object in view, have resulted' in ' unwonted activity among councilors, two' of whom were to be seen the other day motoring up and down and. along £he streets of the borough, making mental notes of further street requirements, Which wijl probably be found t&cked on toHhe proposed loan schedule in the n£ar future.. ( ~lhc orchestra at last, week's operatic performance ; stil) continues to receive complimentary .reference's.
