UNEMPLOYED.

MEN FROM THE OLD COUNTRY. Christchurch, Thursday. Yesterday 'the Mayor 'had several applications from men who were unemployed. He has gone assiduously into details of the unemployed question, and has taken a great deal of trouble to [ wait upon five employers to ascertain | where different classes of men are needed. As a result of his diligence, he was able to offer places to four men yesterday, and lias places ready for two applicants who ho expects to-day. Most of the applications he is receiving are from men who have come recently from the Old Country, and who have not been able to drop into positions, j He stated yesterday that ho had found . that these men were slow to adapt themselves to circumstances to which "they are unused. Some of them apparently expected to find employers waiting at the wharves to engage them when they stepped off the steamers. In jsome cases, also, lie found that those who were seeking work, and who, apparently, were generally anxious to obtain it, were easily discouraged. One man, for instance, who was fretting about 'his wife and family, whom 'he expects soon, complained that the work he had been set to blistered his hands. There seemed to be a somewhat noticeable lack of push amongst applicants.
