THE COST OF EDUCATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. An important statement of the finances of education, showing that the cost has practically doubled in a dozen years, was presented to the Education Commission to-day by Mr. Ilogben, Inspector-General of Schools. Comparing the year 1908190.0 with 1910-1911 the total increase in the cost of primary, education in public and native schools,was £360,000, and the total increase in the cost of secondary education, including secondary schools, secondary departments of district high schools, and Maori secondary schools, was £78,000; the total increase in technical education was £SOOO. The total increase in higher education was £ 10,0001 In 1900 th,ere was an average attendance of 22,418 at sole-teacher schools, the average cost being £3 17s 3d. In 1910 the average attendance at such schools was 22,793, while the average eost amounted to £7 0s Bd, of which salaries represented £0 3s 2d.
