STIPENDIARY STEWARDS
APPROVED BY RACING CONFERENCE. NEW PLYMOUTH'S REMIT CARRIED. Bjr Tctegraph— Own correspondent. Wellington, Last Night. At the Racing Conference to-night the remit from the Taronaki Racing Club, urging the appointment of stipendiary stewards in the interests of the purity of racing, was discussed at some length and eventually carried almost unanimously, amidst applause. The discussion centred mostly around the financial aspect, Sir Geo. Clill'ord stating that it would cost at least £4OOO a year. It was suggested that a tax of y H per cent on the totalisator receipts, which might be remitted by the (lovernment, would find the necessary revenue, and the president suggested as an alternative that the Jockey's Provident Fund, which now stood at £12,000, might be reduced to a fixed £IO,OOO, and the balance of £2OOO, with the surplus of contributions, might b<* allocated to a stipendiary steward fund.
