RAILWAY GUARD REINSTATED. By Telegraph —Press Association, Wellington, Wednesday. Guard Cailman, who was reduced to the rank of porter in connection with the brakes of the train running between Kaiapoi and Cliristchurch, and whose appeal was upheld by the Railway Appeal Board has been reinstated, as a doubt had arisen on the subject of alleged negligence. The Appeal Board's decision was vetoed by the late Minister. SLIP ON MAIN TRUNK LINE. Taihape, Wednesday. Shortly after midday yesterday, the train from Mangaweka to Utiku was delayed by a slip which fell on the line. The engine rods were slightly bent. The line was cleared in between two and three hours. BURGLARIES AT GISBORNE. Gisbonie, Wednesday. Several burglaries of a minor character have been reported in the last few days to tha police, who have arrested on suspicion Arthur Turner, a recent arrival from the south. He was remanded till the 24th hist. AN INEFFICIENT BRIDGE. Napier, Wednesday. At the inquest on Ernest Turpin, who was killed on May 10 through a traction engine crashing through a bridge near Havelock, the Coroner returned a verdict that it should be made unlawful for a local body to build a heavy traffic bridge without first submitting the plans and specifications to the Public Works Department, and that such bridge must be passed by an engineer. AN AUCKLAND GHOST. Auckland, Wednesday. Police investigations of the ghost scare at Kingsland disclosed that several _ women and girls encountered a horrible figure in white making strange noises. Nervous persons were afraid to leave their homes after dark.
