Work has been commenced on the erection of an extensive up-to-date meat freezing and canning works on the Brisbane river, near the citv. It is estimated to cost £350,000. The representative of the undertaking stated that the company is partly British and partly American. He denied the rumour that it was a branch of the American meat trust, but its object was to assist the pastoral industry and development of the State.

It is stated that -the PostmasterGeneral is considering an offer to purchase the Australian rights of the Marconi and Telefunken patents for about £50,000, and thus settle the litigation. COMMONWEALTH COINAGE. Sydney, July 17. Mr. Andrew Fisher states that the Commonwealth Government favors nickel in place of copper coinage. BIG FINDS OF GOLD. Kalgoorlie, July 17. Four hundred and ten ounces of gold have been obtained from an abandoned shaft at Kurnaipi, one slug weighing I 230 ounces. Last week 700 ounces were I unearthed from another claim in the I same vicinity.
