A LANDSLIP.
HUGE FALL AT WANGANUI.
By Telegraph —Press Association. Wanganui, Tuesday.
The continued denudation of the bush on the hillsides adjoining the Wanganui river led to a huge landslide on Sunday just below Atene. The earth on the hillside, soaked with rains and without the bush to hold it, slipped into the river and piled up in the water to such an extent as to reach more than half-way across. It was first thought that the obstruction would block the steamer service, but the fear was groundless, though great care has to be exercised in making a passage through the narrow lane of swift-running water left. Fortunately the river has already commenced to scour the obstruction, and it is unlikely to be permanent. A large number of slips have been reported on the hillsides in the back country. Roads are in a terrible state, the Aliua-Ahua road in particular, many sections having slipped away.
