Lord Curzon elicited from Lord Morley and Earl Crewe - that Britain's attitude would be non-committal towards the Trans-Persian railway. The Government would be free to oppose it or secure such modification of the ultimate plans as at least were detrimental to India's interests.
The Chronicle denounces the projected clearing of India's strategic position. A costly pawn ought not to be jeopardised because Russia just now is our good friend. The likeliest way to end the friendship is to make the prospects over tempting to Russian forward movement. The Daily News is equally emphatic.
