ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
FOUND DROWNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The inquest 011 the body of Wm, 6. Watson, found on the beach yesterday afternoon, was held to-day. A letter addressed to a mate and written in pencil was found in his bedroom this morning. It read: "I am down-hearted and liav.e led a painful life all through a habit which you know. You can iiave my bike and all that belongs to me. It breaks my heart to do it. You can't know how I feel." Evidence showed that deceased had been despondent lately and unable to apply himself to his work. A verdict of suicide whilst temporarily insane was returned. A SAILOR KILLED. Auckland, Saturday. Frank Terrel, a member of the crew of the steamer Glenelg. fell down the forecastle companion-way during heavy weather on the trip from, Auckland to WBangarei. He fractured his skull and died a few minutes after the steamer returned to Auckland. He leaves a wife and seven children. A MAN MISSING. Thames, Saturday. John Phillips, a single man, aged 30, is missing. He was last seen in the vicinity of the Ivareranga river. It is believed that in attempting to cross the railway bridge he fell over and was drowned. His bag and a library book have been found in the harbor. DROWNED IN WELLINGTON HARBOR. Wellington, Last Night. The bodv of a man, so far unidentified, was found in Wellington harbor to-day. In the deceased's pockets were a railway ticket from Silverstream to Wellingtoft and a copy of the Evening Post. The newspaper was dated June 19.
-V DEATH FROM BURNS. Dunedin, Last Night. A married woman named Isabella Tangev, aged 51 years, whose husband is night watchman ffli the railway at Port Chalmers, died in the hospital this morning as a result of burns received some little time ago. She was an inmate of the cottage hospital at Port Chalmers for a time, but was removed to the Dunedin Hospital on Wednesday. \ A MOTOR-CAR FATALITY. Christchureh, Last Night. A motor-ear fatality occurred about 2.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, at Foster's cutting, between Scargill and Ethelton, on the Christchurch-Cheviot road, as the result of which Miss Hughes, about 19 years of age. daughter of Mr, F. W. Hughes, of Port Robinson, lost her life. Yesterday morning John Puche], a fanner of Domett, left town in a motor-ear, which he was driving, for Domett. With him was Miss Hughes, his sister-in-law, and his three-year-old daughter. When going up Foster's cutting on the slow speed, and when three or four chains up the hill, the car suddenly stopped and commenced to go backwards. Puchel put on the i foot-brake, but finding that it was not j holding sufficiently he tried to work the j hand brake. Before he could do so the ear backed into the verv steep batik and j capsized completely, with all four wheels in the air. The occupants were pinned beneath. After considerable struggling, Puchel got free from the car. but before he got free he heard Miss Hughes give three faint moans. Bv means, of a jack hie got the car up and found Mis* Hughes dead, but the infant uninjured. After two -unsuccessful attempts to get medical aid by telephone. Puchel got to Waikari this morning, and was- brought into town by motor-car. His left arm was dislocated. On Friday, when coming to town, the car stopped dead on a. flat road, and lie had it attended tn when he readied town, but on the way out yesterday it sloripcd after jroin: over the Waipara bridge on some loose shingle. Some difficulty was- experienced in getting it re-started.
